DescriptionThe work is from an ongoing series entitled Hot Pockets begun in 2009. These works stand alongside the artist’s large-scale abstract sculptures as an integral part of his oeuvre. As ‘pockets’ they have an interior, linking them to the vessel tradition of ceramics rather than only to the more recent pursuit of abstract sculpture. The work has a small interior and a roughly cut, irregular and asymmetric exterior. The irregular surface is typical of both Callas’s work, designed to respond to and capture the intensity of the kiln environment, while also highlighting the plastic nature of clay.
